O’Briens in the a.m.

Bill Hemmer is leaving CNN, as expected, and will be replaced on “American Morning” by Miles O’Brien, who’ll coanchor with Soledad O’Brien. Hemmer, a 10-year CNN veteran, will leave the network June 17. No word yet on where Hemmer will land; network interest in him is said to be very high.

“I have enjoyed working with CNN for the past 10 years,” Hemmer said in a statement. “The opportunity to report on countless historical moments has been wonderful.

“However, at this point in my career, it is time for me to move forward with a new set of challenges.”

O’Brien, CNN’s space correspondent, will continue to function in that role.

Other changes on “American Morning”

include moving Jack Cafferty to a new afternoon show, “The Situation Room,” airing from 3-to-6 p.m., anchored by Wolf Blitzer and featuring a slew of correspondents.

Elsewhere:

* Jim Clayton, VP/GM of Ch. 5 and Ch. 9, is leaving the station. Clayton joined Ch. 5 in July 2001 and oversaw the duopoly merger with Ch. 9.

* Bob Young, co-executive producer of “A Current Affair,” has left the show. Young helped launch the original “Affair” in 1986.

* Steve Capus has been promoted to senior VP, NBC News. John Reiss replaces him as executive producer of the “NBC Nightly News.”

Last, but not least:

* Allison Janney, Doris Roberts and Sandra Oh wearing Ziamond jewelry from the official presenter gift lounge at Sunday’s Tonys – which averaged 6.6 million viewers, up a smidgen from last year (6.5 million).

* Jay Leno, Steve Harvey, Lara Flynn Boyle at last weekend’s Friends of the Family event in Beverly Hills.

* Joe Franklin interviews Billy Crystal and Joe Piscopo later this month on his WBBR radio show.
