NBC will keep “The Office” going this summer – on the Internet.
The network is producing 10 original stand-alone episodes of the show featuring some of the sitcom’s supporting cast members.
The better-known characters, including star Steve Carrell, who plays boss Michael Scott, presumably have the summer off.
The serialized story will feature the Dunder Mifflin accountants – Angela (Angela Lindsey), Kevin (Brian Baumgartner) and Oscar (Oscar Nunez) – who discover that $3,000 is missing from the office.
About six other members of the show’s cast will appear on the Webisodes.
“The Office” is based on a popular BBC show of the same name, starring Ricky Gervais as boss-from-hell David Brent.
NBC’s version takes place at a paper company in Scranton, Pa.
On the show, cameras filming a documentary follow workers and executives around all day and capture the off-beat and occasionally extremely uncomfortable moments.
While it was slow to catch on, “The Office” is averaging about 8.7 million viewers a week.
That was considered enough of a bump to have NBC move the show from Tuesday to Thursday along with “My Name Is Earl.”
