A hot time in the old town
PEOPLE are still talking, wondering about, dramatizing and awed by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. As the volcanic lava swept down the mountain, a city of 5,000 residents and hundreds of buildings was buried under 75 feet of debris. The Roman Empire was devastated. In the BBC recreation “Pompeii: The Last Day,” actors such as Tim Pigott-Smith and Jonathan Firth reenact those last desperate hours. Reconstructions here are based on scientific findings unearthed in Pompeii and its sister city Herculaneum. Pigott-Smith plays Pliny the Elder, the scholar and admiral who recorded the eruption from his nearby perch on the Bay of Naples.
