THE STARR REPORT
Claman victory
It wasn’t exactly the ancient city of Jericho, but when the walls came tumbling down in Fort Lee, CNBC anchor Liz Claman was ready.
Claman was anchoring “Today’s Business” at around 6 a.m. when, during a commercial break, an entire studio wall crashed down on the set, shattering much in its wake and causing quite a mess of debris.
“This huge set wall that spans the entire length of the set came falling down and hit a pillar in the middle of that area,” says Claman.
“It cracked right in half – boom! People from all parts of the building came running to see if everyone was OK.”
Claman, however, seemed unfazed – and went on the air about 10 seconds later as if nothing had happened.
“Everybody was laughing because she was rock-solid,” says one eyewitness. “People were scrambling to get out of the way, but Liz didn’t blink an eye.”
Says Claman: “I’ve covered major storms like Hurricane Andrew, but I’ll tell you – this really scared me!”
Two good sports
Ch. 7 sports anchor Scott Clark, a dedicated member of the Alcoholism Council of New York, spoke at the Angel Ball of the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Tuesday night arriving, as he said, “on an ark” after that night’s blinding downpour.
Clark was invited by honoree Adele Smithers Fornaci, whose husband, the late R. Brinkley Smithers, founded the drug treatment center that bears his name.
The music man
It’s never good to burn bridges. Just ask Steve Leeds.
The ex-MTV/VH1 honcho, now the head of Universal Records, was hanging with some of his old MTV buddies at Da Tomasso on Tuesday to celebrate Universal recording artists Dynamite Hack’s “Boys-N-The Hood” remake – which is currently MTV’s most-requested video.
Internal bleeding
More on RNN, which, as we reported yesterday, has shuttered its New Jersey bureau, forcing out star reporter Debi Gallo – whose loss due to budget cuts is being lamented by news director Ian Rubin.
Insiders say RNN has just one news reporter left in Manhattan, while another Manhattan-based reporter covers the NASDAQ.
RNN also laid off a reporter up at network headquarters in Kingston last Friday – with a live truck and operator also cut this week.
