THE STARR REPORT
A coming-out party on ‘All My Children’?
Erica Kane’s (Susan Lucci) daughter on ABC’s “All My Children,” Bianca Montgomery (Eden Riegel), will be coming out as a lesbian in a future episode, sources say.
“She would be daytime television’s only gay or lesbian character,” saysScott Seomin, entertainment media director for the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).
“Gay characters seem to be the final taboo in daytime television,” says Seomin. “A soap opera called ‘Gays of Our Lives’ is not likely to happen anytime soon.”
“We’re not going to confirm or deny that rumor,” says an ABC spokeswoman. “To do that would compromise the storyline for our viewers.”
Ironically, “All My Children” was the first daytime show to portray a gay character when, in 1983, Donna Pescow, portrayed lesbian child psychologist Lynn Carson.
Gays have also been featured in “As the World Turns” and “One Life to Live.”
Fans get the chanceto choose new single
MTV is giving its fans a chance to choose the next single from 98 Degrees, performing live Saturday on MTV in “First Listen: Live” (noon).
“The purpose of the show is for the MTV audience to select the next single from the group’s new CD, ‘Revelation,'” says Universal Records promo chief Steve Leeds, who organized the concert with MTV’s Tom Calderone and Elli Cola. The CD is in stores next Tuesday, Sept. 26.
98 Degrees is also scheduled to do MTV’s “Total Request Live” with Carson Daly and an in-store appearance at the Virgin Megastore.
They gotta have heartfor tennis tourney
Mike Wallace, Larry King and Warren Buffet donated $10 apiece to the American Heart Association – but don’t call ’em cheap.
Wallace, King and Buffet were all heeding CNN financial editor/anchor Myron Kandel’s “$10 tops” rule for donations to help the AHA fund its Heart Bypass Open Tennis Tournament in Lakeridge, Ct.
Kandel, who’s had quintuple-bypass surgery (same as David Letterman) told pals at Nirvana that he didn’t want anyone to contribute more than $10 to the tournament, in which only people who’ve had cardiac bypass surgery will participate.
Kandel plays tennis with Wallace, who has a pacemaker, while King has undergone bypass surgery.
