Both of these sets have been out a few weeks, but now that Martin Scorsese’s finally won a best-directing Oscar, treat yourself to his gripping cops-‘n’-gangsters thriller. Not only do you get a feature that leaves your heart pounding, the second disc includes an excellent Turner Classics special on Scorsese’s career and a look at the Boston mobster who inspired Jack Nicholson’s over-the-top performance.
“Infernal Affairs,” the masterful Chinese film that inspired “The Departed” is equally good. Even if you know the plot, the subtle performances of Andy Lau (in Matt Damon’s role) and Tony Leung (in Leo DiCaprio’s) are remarkable. You’ll appreciate Scorsese’s work even more, as he improved on a brilliant film without resorting to a shot-by-shot remake.
The box comes with the second and third “Infernal Affairs” installments, Hong Kong hits that offer more strong performances but don’t quite match the powerhouse impact of the original.

Yes, everything you’ve heard about Sascha Baron Cohen’s bizarre satire is true. It’s disgusting and offensive, and you’ll laugh so hard that you’ll want to watch every deleted scene. Plus, you get to check out the Kazakh infomercial for the soundtrack, including the hit sing-along “Throw the Jew Down the Well.”
