There’s a good idea lurking somewhere in the plot of the low-budget rom-com “TiMER”: People get a digital clock implanted in their wrist, and the clock will tell them the exact second when they’ll meet their “soul mate.” It could be years from now, or just days.

An adventurous director might have turned that idea into an edgy comedy. But “TiMER” director-writer Jac Schaeffer, in his feature debut, goes for clichés and easy laughs.

Emma Caulfield (Anya on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) is pert and personable as Oona, an almost-30 orthodontist obsessed with finding a man.

Still, “TiMER” never rises above the level of a sitcom. All that’s missing is the laugh track.

If it were on TV, you could change the channel. But when you’ve raided your 401(k) to pay for tickets and overpriced popcorn, you are pretty much trapped.
