TONY VS. TONY
Not since John Wilkes Booth interrupted “Our American Cousin” has the theater world suffered such bad timing.
We speak of June 10, when the annual Tony Awards telecast goes head-to-head with that other Tony, the heart of HBO’s eight-year epic, “The Sopranos.”
Granted, CBS probably didn’t foresee that the “Sopranos” finale would be pushed back as star James Gandolfini recuperated from knee surgery.
“I think the Tony [Awards] family can take the Tony Soprano family any day,” said a brave Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of Broadway’s trade arm, the League of American Theaters and Producers. “I can promise you, it’s going to be a great show!”
