UNLESS you’ve been living under a rock for many years, you know about the annual carbo-loading pasta party for 14,000 the night before the New York City Marathon at Tavern on the Green.
But where, you may wonder, do runners trot off to after crossing the finish line Sunday?
The official Finish Line Banquet of the New York Road Runners at Tavern on the Green is already sold out. But participants and cheerleaders also disperse to other nearby eateries, especially those with outside seating when the
weather is nice.
One C.P.S. (at the Plaza Hotel, 1 Central Park South, between Fifth Avenue and 59th Street) plans on seeing its usual, sometimes highly vocal, postrace contingent.
They will be serving brunch until 3 p.m., a “leisure menu” of several lunch appetizers, entrees and desserts from 3 until 5 p.m., and dinner.
Pomodoro Rosso (229 Columbus Ave., between 70th and 71st streets) has become an Italian apres-contest tradition for others.
Staffers say many tables are already reserved by marathoners and their fans for Saturday and Sunday. They’re open noon to 3 p.m. and then 5 to 10 p.m. for dinner.
Other Columbus Avenue raceday favorites include Bruculino (225 Columbus Ave., at 70th Street) and Harry’s Burrito Junction (241 Columbus Ave., between 70th and 71st streets).
And at Seppi’s at Le Parker Meridien (123 W. 56th St., between Sixth and Seventh avenues), chef Claude Solliard, a marathoner, will pour a glass of post-race champagne for any runner who shows up bearing his or her Marathon number. The special $40 menu is available to everyone, though. The prix-fixe includes seaweed noodle and endive salad with pan-seared scallops, penne with lobster and saffron sauce or with duck confit and mushrooms, and a fruit plate with sorbet.
Maybe that’s why the male and female winners raced there after last year’s Marathon.
