One of the world’s most-watched missing child cases is getting another hard look: Madeleine McCann is the subject of a new documentary streaming now on Netflix.
“There is huge hope to be had,” says Jim Gamble, a top child protection officer during the case’s first investigation, in “The Disappearance of Madeline McCann.”
The 3-year-old British girl went missing from her bed at a Portuguese resort where her family was visiting with friends in 2007. Speculation and internet sleuthing dominated the case, which received worldwide attention when the story broke.
At the time, Portuguese police named parents Kate and Gerry McCann as suspects, a status later dropped due to lack of evidence. Still, many “armchair detectives” who follow the investigation insist that Madeline’s mom and dad were behind her disappearance.
The true crime doc’s trailer tackles claims of human trafficking, collusion and a police set-up.
Since her disappearance, interest has been non-stop: Most recently, a top official said he believes someone is protecting the youngster’s kidnappers.
In 2016, Scotland Yard was given more money to investigate a new lead in Madeleine’s disappearance — a tip that a gang of European traffickers took her after snapping pictures of her at the resort’s beach.
New criminal investigation technology will likely play a role in the hope investigators have: “I absolutely believe that in my lifetime we will find out what has happened,” Gamble tells The Sun.
So is Madeleine found? The trailer doesn’t go that far. But it does tease possible updates in her disappearance and story.
“Somebody knows what’s happened to Madeleine McCann,” a voice at the end of the trailer says.
