Sunday’s World Cup finale snared a record combined 24.3 million viewers on ABC and Univision.

That was a record for Spanish-language Univision (8.8 million), but ABC’s viewership (15.5 million) fell short of the nearly 18 million viewers who watched the 1999 Women’s World Cup Finale, a 5-4 US victory over China.

(That’s the game in which US captain Brandi Chastain famously ripped off her jersey top after scoring the winning goal.)

Still, Spain’s 1-0 victory over The Netherlands was the most-watched Men’s World Cup game ever among total viewers on US TV.

And overall, World Cup coverage on ABC and sister cable network ESPN was up 31 percent in ratings over 2006.

It also averaged over 10 million viewers three times, strong numbers compared to ESPN’s and ABC’s 2010 NBA Playoff average (5 million and 11 million viewers, respectively).

Univision’s nearly 9 million viewers, a World Cup finale record for the network, was up nearly 50 percent from Italy’s victory over France in the 2006 World Cup finale.

That game averaged 6 million viewers on Univision.
