SORRY, “Idol” fans, the show’s over.

That’s it – everybody go home. Bye, bye. It was fun while it lasted.

“American Idol” began its fifth season only a week ago, and already a probable winner has emerged.

If you were among the 34.8 million people (according to Nielsen numbers released yesterday) who watched the two-hour audition show from Greensboro, N.C., Tuesday night, then you saw her.

She is Paris Bennett, an adorable 17-year-old from Fayetteville, Ga., whose audition might have been the most successful in the show’s history.

She gave Paula Abdul goosebumps and rendered Simon Cowell virtually speechless. And you didn’t have to be in

the audition room either. Her voice had the same effect on viewers at home.

She was so mesmerizing that Paula invited her to sing a second song after she nailed her first one, “Cowboy Take Me Away” by the Dixie Chicks.

Then Bennett sang the Dave Brubeck/Paul Desmond jazz classic “Take Five” and the performance just wrecked everybody.

“You’re 17?” Paula asked incredulously. “There aren’t words that express how we feel blessed in your presence. You are wonderful.”

“Where have you been hiding?” asked Simon, obviously thunderstruck, but also plainly delighted.

“She’s got the lineage, though, man,” said Randy Jackson. “She gets it honest.”

It was Jackson who recognized Bennett’s aunt outside in the waiting area before the audition. She is Ann Nesby, a Grammy winner as lead vocalist for the gospel group Sounds of Blackness.

“This is Ann Nesby, y’all,” Randy announced when he saw her, “one of the greatest singers in the known world.”

Of course, Bennett has a long way to go before she (or anyone else) can be crowned winner of “American Idol V.”

The finale isn’t until May, and much can go wrong between now and then. But watching Bennett sing, you couldn’t

help feeling that something special was happening.

Meanwhile, the audition episodes continue next Tuesday and Wednesday nights through Tuesday, Feb. 7. On Feb. 8, the competition moves to Hollywood for the first time and continues Tuesday, Feb. 14, and Wednesday, Feb. 15, when the final 24 competitors – 12 males and 12 females – will be announced.

How much do you want to bet that Paris Bennett will be among them?
