“Tying The Knot: The Wedding of Melissa Joan Hart” []

IF you are lucky enough to have escaped a wedding invitation this weekend, you can still watch Melissa Joan Hart plan her wedding on “Tying The Knot, The Wedding of Melissa Joan Hart.”

It’s not bad enough we’re expected to care about her wedding, but ABC Family expects people to watch six separate episodes leading up to it.

If you’ve ever planned a wedding, you know that even if you’re the one getting married, the process of planning is tedious – emphasis on tedious!

Or, in the wise words of Jerry Seinfeld (on weddings in general), “Nobody wants to go to your wedding! We are not excited like you are.”

Episode one takes us from Melissa telling us the story of her engagement to Mark Wilkerson, lead vocalist for the band “Course of Nature,” to the engagement party in his hometown in Alabama, to the actual planning of the wedding.

For reasons never made clear, Hart wants to get married in Florence, Italy, although she doesn’t appear to have any ties there. (Other than a movie, “Sabrina Goes To Rome,” which obviously isn’t Florence.) Or none they talk about, at any rate.

Meantime, Wilkerson, who has never been out of the country before, says he found Italy “smelly, old, and nobody spoke English.” This, as you can imagine, was not what I in my Italian, er, heart cared to hear.

The couple, along with their wedding planner, Jackson Lowell, who worked on premiere parties for movies like “Braveheart” (he can’t get away from the heart theme, apparently), go from place to place in Florence looking for the perfect castle.

We are made to endure Hart’s comments about Italy, like, “[The castle] is too medievally – it needs something to dress it up,” or worse, “Michelangelo – he did some frescoes and stuff in it.”

When the wedding planner asks them, “Are you happy,” Hart jumps in and says, “We’re very happy!”

Maybe – but it looks like Wilkerson would be a lot happier if he didn’t have to be there – especially since he’s afraid to eat the food and she gets car sick up in the hills.

In future episodes, we will follow Hart as she tries on wedding gowns, goes to New York, where she’s designing a line of wedding lingerie, attends her shower and a round of parties – as well as Wilkerson’s bach party – and, finally, the wedding. It sounds like more fun than the first episode.
