THEY’RE young, superwealthy – and not necessarily boring!
Last year, it was all about the tech geeks. But Fortune magazine’s 2001 list of the 40 richest Americans under 40 is sprinkled with a healthy dose of stardust.
While the 2000 slate had only one bold-faced name, basketball impresario Michael Jordan, the third annual list – which hits newsstands Monday – includes six entertainers and athletes.
And, good news singletons, most of them are on the market.
Golf wunderkind and celebrity pitchman Tiger Woods scraped into the final spot at No. 40, while bad boy all-’rounder Sean “P. Diddy” Combs came in at No. 22.
Multimillionaire actors Tom Cruise (No. 19) and Jim Carrey (No. 36) could pool their wealth and buy a movie ticket and a bucket of popcorn for every Gen-Xer in America, Fortune notes.
Or they could buy one bucket of popcorn and a pair of Cartier diamond chandelier earrings just for you.
Two married men round out the stellar component of the Top 40: Jordan, who caught some serious air to reach the No. 13 spot, and rap mogul Master P (No. 20).
The rising fortunes of these stars is partly due to the collapse of the Internet economy, which created a number of openings on the 2001 list.
The rest, Fortune says, can be attributed to the fact that they have transformed themselves from mere entertainers into powerful brands.
But don’t dismiss the dot-com billionaires just yet.
Dell Computer honcho Michael Dell topped the list for the third time with a staggering net worth of $16.3 billion, and the rest of the top five include familiar tech names like eBay entrepreneurs Pierre Omidyar and Jeff Skoll, Gateway Inc.’s Ted Waitt and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos.
