Pretty soon there might be no space in New York restaurants for anything but warnings from City Hall.
City Councilwoman Inez Barron (D-Brooklyn) introduced a bill Wednesday that would require restaurants in the city to post warnings about the “risks of excessive sugar and other carbohydrate intake for diabetic and pre-diabetic individuals.”
The bill comes at a time when chain restaurants in the Big Apple already post calorie counts and symbols of salt shakers next to menu items with high sodium content.
“This is not about telling people what to eat,” Barron told The Post. “It’s about sharing information and informing people so they can make more informed choices.
“I don’t think people can have enough information, and I feel we need increased awareness on the danger of having excess sugar and carbohydrates.”
Barron said the legislation is needed because of the rising number of diabetes cases citywide along with the fact that many children aren’t getting enough exercise.
The Health Department said it is reviewing the bill.
