Doctors on the night shift are taking to TikTok to share their horror stories in the ER.

Dr. Benjamin Schmidt sparked the trend after sharing a story with his 461,000 followers about a man who complained of back discomfort and pain while urinating.

The gastroenterologist from St. Louis asked the patient if he could perform a genital exam, which is a standard procedure on males with painful urination, since urinary tract infections are less common for men.

While doing the exam, Schmidt “noticed this odd black splotch in the middle of his penis,” the doctor told NeedToKnow.online.

“I wasn’t sure how to address it at first but then I just decided to ask him point-blank,” Schmidt recalled. “I asked him if he’s ever seen this black spot on his penis before.

“At first he looked concerned and said, ‘Black spot?’”

The patient leaned forward to look at the spot and “laughed a little bit and said, ‘Oh, no, that’s just a tattoo of a scorpion that I got in Vietnam.’”

“It was the quickest I’ve gone from concerned to relieved to a bit grossed out and unnerved,” Schmidt admitted.

After the clip went viral, other doctors and medical professionals chimed in to share their own late-night horror stories — specifically stories regarding genitalia.

“I was in an anatomy lab when I noticed some black spots on the corpse’s penis,” one wrote about a semi-similar experience.

“I did not pay any more attention to it until I realized he was full of tattoos, so I went back to check my hypothesis; upon closer examination, I was able to decipher the name ‘John,’” the commenter added. “Up to this day, I still want to know who John is.”

Another user shared their own tattoo find.

“I had a patient who had a little rosebud tattoo that bloomed into a flower when he was experiencing more blood flow to the area,” they shared. “Perhaps you just didn’t get to see the whole thing.”

One doctor shared that they once noticed a woman’s name and an unrevealed “instruction” tattooed on a man’s penis.

“[Definitely] took me a second to fully process. [Just] about lost it,” they said.

A different medical professional added, “I think a middle-of-the-night genital exam is one of those things medical students should be expecting in the future.”

“After 20 years in medicine … Get used to this. Happens all the time!” another agreed.

As for Schmidt’s original patient and the reason for his pain, that is still unknown, since Schmidt handed over the case to another doctor at the end of his shift.

“I was still waiting on the results of some of his tests before my shift ended, so I’m not sure exactly what was the cause of his painful urination — but I’m definitely sure it was not related to his scorpion penis tattoo,” he said.
