Self-proclaimed wellness guru Suzanne Somers is now calling her 2001 breast cancer diagnosis a “veiled gift.”
“I thought, how ironic — I was known on ‘Three’s Company’ as the Queen of the Jiggle,” Somers tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “I believe this happened to me because I was a sex symbol — whatever that is.”
The 72-year-old says cancer gave her a platform — and, as the author of a series of best-selling alternative health books, she is not afraid to use it.
After having a 2.4-centimeter tumor removed — which took a sizable section of her right breast — and undergoing radiation, Somers decided to forgo chemotherapy. But not before a doctor told her she’d die without it.
Her reply: “I honestly believe I will die if I do what you tell me. The idea of flooding my body with chemical poison just doesn’t reckon with who I am.”
Instead, she treated herself with mistletoe extract injections to strengthen her immune system.
Also called Iscador, the injections are a popular cancer treatment among proponents of holistic medicine, especially in Europe. While there have been studies on its use in cancer treatment, it is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
In the interest of keeping foreign bodies out of her body, Somers also passed on the suggestion of a silicone implant.
Alas, the former “Step by Step” star’s high-profile claims of a “regrown breast” by way of stem-cell surgery were debunked two weeks ago by experts with actual medical degrees.
