Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen broke his silence late Thursday following a mental health evaluation and two encounters with police on Saturday, vowing to return as a “much-improved” person and player.

Griffen, 30, apologized to his teammates but did not offer a timeline for his return to the team after a series of troubling events that began at a hotel in Minneapolis. The nine-year NFL vet and three-time Pro Bowler threatened to “shoot someone” if he wasn’t allowed in his room.

“This past week’s events have raised many questions and I want to apologize to everyone who was impacted,” Griffen wrote on Instagram to more than 48,000 followers. “I am currently focused on resolving personal issues with which I have been dealing for a long time. Once I have had time to address those issues, I hope to share my story with everyone.”

Griffen said he was “extremely grateful” for the support he’s received from the team, his teammates and fans.

“I apologize for not being able to take the field with my teammates and do not have an exact timeline for my return,” Griffen’s post continued. “I promise, however, I will return as a much-improved person and player.”

Griffen did not travel with the Vikings to Los Angeles for the team’s 38-31 loss to the Rams on Thursday. Police in Minneapolis and Minnetrista on Saturday responded to incidents involving Griffen, who had been “really struggling” in recent weeks, suffering from explosive outbursts and paranoia, the team’s player development director told police. He later jumped out of an ambulance on the way to a mental health facility, according to a police report, but was not accused of a crime.

“The only thing we really are concerned about for Everson isn’t anything to do with football,” Coach Mike Zimmer said Tuesday. “It’s about him getting better.”
