A baby boy was born at around 9 and a half ounces — the smallest male on record — and he’s doing just fine now.
But it wasn’t easy for the little guy.
After 24 weeks of treatment in intensive care, he grew to a healthy 7 pounds and was sent home, the Japan Times reports.
The tyke — whose name was not released — was introduced to the world after a C-section delivery in August at Keio University in Tokyo.
He was so tiny at birth that he reportedly could fit in the palms of someone’s hands.
The average weight of a newborn baby ranges from 5 and a half to 10 pounds, according to the pregnancy website What to Expect.
The world’s smallest baby on record was a girl born in Germany in 2015 at just under 9 ounces.
Following the infant’s historic recovery, Keio University doctors offered a hopeful message.
“I want people to know that babies can return home vigorous even if they are born small,” said attending Dr. Takeshi Arimitsu.
