France has passed a new law barring restaurants from giving customers refills on sugary drinks to try to combat a sharp rise in the country’s obesity rates.

Put into effect Friday, the regulation primarily targets foreign-owned fast-food eateries that offer free refills of soft drinks, CBS News reported.

In 2004, French lawmakers voted to remove all candy machines from schools.

Seven years later, they signed into a law another measure forcing school cafeterias to serve French fries only once a week.

A nationwide soda tax has also been enacted.
