American workers are cracked out on amphetamines.

A study by prescription-drug manager Express scripts found the use of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medications such as Adderall, Vyvanse and Focalin spiked by 53 percent between 2008 and 2012. The uppers earned a reputation as “smart pills” that may improve a person’s short-term ability to learn or understand.

Jstor reports that the drugs have been abused by young professionals like Wall Street traders, software engineers and lawyers to keep up with stiff competition in corporate America.

Furthermore, a study by IBISWorld saw that ADHD drugs are a $13 billion-a-year industry in the US. Comparatively, coffee, another stimulant, rakes in $30 billion annually.
