The bagel emoji is finally getting a creamy schmear — and a Big Apple stamp of approval.
Earlier this month, Apple debuted a dry, sad-looking bagel emoji that many New Yorkers just couldn’t stomach. With its deflated top and laser-cut slicing, the illustrated breakfast item looked more like a frozen supermarket round than the beloved homegrown boiled-and-baked variety.
This week, bagel purists prevailed. In response to the complaints, Apple announced on Monday that it had corrected its Cynthia Nixon-level faux pas, revealing an updated bagel emoji with a springy-looking top, a perfectly imperfect rise and — most crucial to some — a silky spread of cream cheese between the sliced halves.
The folks at Philadelphia Cream Cheese were certainly thrilled at the new serving suggestion. “We are celebrating,” the condiment company tweeted, along with a picture of the new emoji and the hashtag #happybagel.
Many other Twitter users were equally enamored. “The New Yorker in me finds the new bagel emoji so beautiful and detailed,” one wrote before recommending a finishing touch. “It needs seeds.”
Still, some were flabbergasted by the attention focused on Bagelgate.
“You’re kidding, right?” one user tweeted. “Complaining about an emoji is peak millennial.”
