A Brazilian man died at his own birthday party last week after a beer keg exploded while he was trying to fix it.

The tragedy occurred the evening of Sept. 17 after Gilson do Nascimento, 43, rented the booze barrel for his b’day bash in Campo Bom in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, Newsflash reported.

Unfortunately, the beer wouldn’t come out of the tap properly, so the locksmith shop owner decided to try to repair it himself.

“There was a problem,” said Nascimento’s niece, who opted to remain anonymous and was at the soirée along with the man’s wife, sister and 15-year-old son.

She said “only foam” was coming out of the device. “My uncle called them [the rental company] and they gave him instructions on how to start fixing it until they arrived,” she added.

Tragedy struck, however, when the brew-dispensing device blew up, causing metal shards to hit Nascimento in the head.

The victim’s niece said the family is “very shaken” by the freak accident. Nascimento’s passing is perhaps even more tragic given that, six years prior, the family man had battled cancer, which forced him to spend almost two months in an ICU.

Police “are interviewing witnesses at the scene at the time of the incident,” said spokesperson Clovis Nei da Silva, who added that they are treating the unfortunate man’s death as accidental.

However, authorities are investigating the brewery and delivery company to determine if there was a malfunction in the barrel they supplied.

The lawyer for Chopp Express, which supplied the keg, insisted that, contrary to the niece’s prior claims, the customer was told not to touch the equipment as a technician was heading to the house to repair it.

He added that when the keg repairman did arrive, the beer dispenser had already exploded and the victim was dead at the scene.

An autopsy took place on Sept. 18, the morning after his death, and Nascimento was buried the following day at the Jardim da Memória Cemetery in Novo Hamburgo, Newsflash reported.

“He was a warrior, a working man, a wonderful family man. He was everything to us,” Nascimento’s godmother, Angela Maria de Oliveira, told local media.

“He will be sorely missed in our lives, it was a full house with him, always a full house,” she added.
