Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have, once again, shown their independent streak by ordering an American-style wedding cake for their May 19 nuptials.

The springtime-y dessert — an organic lemon and elderflower concoction with buttercream icing made by California-raised baker Claire Ptak — couldn’t be more different from the stodgy fruitcake traditionally served at upper-class British weddings.

It is believed to be the first time since the days of Queen Victoria that a royal couple has ditched the culinary custom.

For their 2011 marriage, Harry’s brother, Prince William, and his wife, Kate Middleton, offered up an eight-tier fruitcake topped with marzipan and icing.

“Harry and Meghan are blazing a trail within royal circles,” royal commentator Eloise Parker tells The Post. “This cake is setting the scene for a lot more breaks with tradition on their upcoming wedding day.”
