A 23-year-old man in Texas is left to raise his six siblings after his parents were killed in a car crash.
Ethan Owen, who is the oldest child of seven, said he is learning to be a parent to six following the April 23 wreck near Sulphur Springs, news station WFAA reported.
The family was returning home to Plano, which is 24 miles north of Dallas, from a camping trip when their car was sideswiped by a pickup truck. The collision sent the SUV off the road into a creek where it became partially submerged, according to news station WCVB.
Ethan was the only sibling who wasn’t in the vehicle.
Two were rushed to the hospital in critical condition, while the four others were treated for bruises and other minor injuries.
His parents were also rushed to the hospital, where they later died.
The eldest son was working at Outback Steakhouse when he heard the gut-wrenching news.
“It was like someone tearing out my heart. It hurt a lot,” Owen told WFAA.
Owen said that he was forced to make decisions about one brother’s emergency surgery moments before learning his parents died.
Friends and family have helped take care of Owen’s younger siblings, but he is still figuring out how to support them all.
“I have absolutely no idea [how I am going to do it],” Owen said.
A GoFundMe page was created to raise money to help pay for his parents’ funeral and any immediate needs for the kids.
“That’s a lot for a 23-year-old young man to shoulder,” his pastor, Craig Curry, told WCVB. “He’s done well, I can’t imagine the responsibility of that. They’ve had so much happen and we just want to make sure that they get the support they need to grow up.”
