5 tricky spring trends

As the spring blossoms emerge, so does a new crop of style trends. Taking cues from the off-the-runway looks at New York and Paris fashion weeks, it’s obvious this season’s looks aren’t for wallflowers. Silhouettes are even bolder; prints are mixed, shaken and stirred together — and beauty is bursting with intrepid hues. We tried some of our favorites around town. PASTEL HAIR (BEFORE, ABOVE) Thakoon sent models down his spring runway with pastel hair, and Katy Perry and Kelly Osbourne infuse their tresses with crazy colors. Why not this brunette? I went to Scott Peper at Oscar Blandi (545 Madison Ave.; 212-421-9800) for lavender locks. After four rounds of lifting the pigment, Peper, a perfectionist with a mad scientist laugh, mixed up the most radiant shade. I followed up with a Kerastase Masque to soften the hair. As I walked out of the salon six hours later, I felt glamorous. Pals at dinner raved. The next day, a gaggle of tots grinned like they’d seen the Easter bunny. I even got a free subway ride, thanks to an admiring construction worker. But I’ve had to wear more neutral hues and be careful to dress a little more demure. Christian Johnston

MULLET SKIRTS After appearing on the runways of Jason Wu and DVF, the mullet skirt was ubiquitous at New York Fashion Week. Short in the front and long in the back, the cascading hemline is high on this season’s list of must-haves. I’m only 5 feet tall, so I chose a black one with a gradual dip, and paired it with platforms for a boost. It’s a long way from that wedding dress in Guns N’ Roses’ “November Rain” video. SHEER TOPS Torsos are on full display this spring, with transparent blouses on top. Still, many people are afraid to wear them. If your midsection looks like George Costanza’s, skip this. But if you’re comfy showing skin, layer it over a camisole or a tank bra. With my sweet Peter Pan-collar top I wore an Aubade bra, which offers more coverage than most. Retailers such as American Eagle sell thriftier versions that cover the rib cage and are still sexy without giving it all away. Christian Johnston

MIXED PRINTS Mixing plaids, stripes, florals and graphics are style de riguer for labels such as Prada and J.Crew. For maximum impact, keep tones and colors in the same family. A touch of animal print is always a great punctuation. This look is perfect for a summer cocktail soiree. Christian Johnston

HEEL-LESS SHOES Lady Gaga and Victoria Beckham are fashion masochists who regularly wear these architecturally stunning but physically challenging shoes. After numerous marathons and subsequent knee surgeries, these beauties were the last thing I wanted to try. “I don’t know how you’re even functioning in those things,” cracked a cop outside of my office building. I wobbled half a block to Rockefeller Center, and balance issue aside, I have to admit that I felt pretty wild in them. However, these shoes will be taking an early retirement from my wardrobe.
