But as far as shoe fetishes go, I’d happily leave the world of mile-high stilettoes to the ladies who lunch in exchange for a wardrobe filled with quirky footwear from Maison Martin Margiela. Truth be told, I’m already well on my way… Margiela’s iconic one-toe Tabi shoes and boots have been gracing the tootsies of die-hard fashion freaks since 1989 — and have become a sort of calling card for in-the-knows everywhere from Paris to London to New York. (Like: “You’re wearing Tabis? Ooh, maybe we can be friends.”)

While my colleagues may mock my choice of footwear (“Hoofs,” I think, was a choice dig) and people on the street turn and stare, my Tabis aren’t going anywhere — they’re super-comfortable and they go with my lumpy black Belgian wardrobe just fine.

Tabis come in many shapes and sizes. They’re often limited-edition and are considered collectors’ items. Find them at Maison Martin Margiela’s 803 Greenwich Street shop or on eBay. If you come across a pair of black leather Tabi ankle boots (size 39 — my holy grail), drop me a line. I’ll be your best friend.
