Love your curls. That’s one of the celebratory messages from celebrity hairstylist Orlando Pita’s first shoot for Alexa Beauty. “I wanted to show different kinds of textured hair so people can embrace theirs,” says Pita, who rocks a halo of dark ringlets. “If your hair looks good on you, who cares if that’s what Kim Kardashian’s wearing? It’s about getting the most out of your hair.”

For Pita, that might mean loosening or tightening a natural wave with an iron, pulling the coils apart by hand to increase the volume, or adding shine and control with Argan Rejuvenating Hair Treatment Oil from his namesake haircare line. All of which occurred when he took Brazilian model Hilda Dias Pimental’s mane through six looks during the sitting at a Soho studio with his longtime friend, photographer Joshua Jordan. The results are effortless, not belabored or fussy.

“This undone thing is everything that I love,” says Pita, a top editorial talent who did the hair for 10 New York Fashion Week shows as well as the September covers of Allure and InStyle, and is known for his creativity. “Sometimes that takes a lot of work and sometimes it doesn’t, depending on your texture.”

He points to actress Blake Lively’s messy blond tresses as an example of easy, uncontrived chic. “She has a non-haircut, it’s chunky, it’s got grown-out color. She doesn’t look like some hairdresser worked on that hair forever.”

“Women come into the salon and say, ‘I want to look like I didn’t get a haircut,’” adds Pita, who spends several days a month at Orlo, his influential salon in the Meatpacking District. “Get rid of the supermodel big hair, cleanse the palate. We’re coming to a more natural stage. Ungroomed is cool.”

“This braid has pieces flowing and is kind of destroyed. This is for the kind of person who doesn’t like perfection — and I’m one of those people,” says Pita.

“This is all her hair — no extensions in there. I wanted to smooth out her hair, rather than straighten it, and keep the size and the volume. I used a large, inch-and-a-half-barrel curling iron, which just smooths out the cuticle, and some Argan oil.”

“When I took the windswept side braid out, I quickly brushed and straightened her hair a little bit more. Then I did a French twist but left all the ends sticking out. I spiked them up and put hairspray on them.”

“This is a looser wave with the same set [as the cover shoot]; it’s my Diana Ross or Diane von Furstenberg look. I used a little bit of hairspray on my brush and brushed only the top layer to tame any flyaways and really bring out the shine in the hair. A side part gives it a certain glamour, and when you have that much hair, it’s nice to control part of it with a barrette.”

“When you have textured hair, the braid is a way to control your hair without damaging it with heat. I wanted to do a braid with a positioning that is new. The parting started at the right side of the crown and I swept the braid across the forehead, behind the ear and down the side. I used my Argan oil to tame the hair.”

“This is a loose mane of tight curls stretched out, so there’s more movement. I used a curling iron with a barrel the size of a pencil to wrap half-inch square sections, then pinned the curls while the makeup was being done. After I unpinned everything, I separated the curls into three strands. I used my Argan Rejuvenating Hair Treatment Oil to give the hair softness.”
