One of the hottest items trending among both fashion and celebrity circles is as fashionable as it is functional for frigid New York City winters.

Enter: the babushka.

Singer Frank Ocean recently shared a selfie on Instagram wearing a white chain-print silk head scarf styled underneath a black hoodie with the caption: “FaceTimes in Babuska.”

However, A$AP Rocky was one of the first stylish singers to hop on board the haute headwear game, sporting a Gucci botanical flora print headscarf to the LACMA gala back in November.

Rocky’s Gucci getup sparked a fusillade of memes of babushka naysayers, prompting Rocky to declare on social: “I’m just encouraging all guys to wear babushkas from her on out. Silk gang, silk city. You know how we do it.”

Rocky and Ocean are taking their fashion cues from designers’ Spring/Summer 2019 runways: Demna Gvasalia of French fashion label Vetements sent male models down the runway sporting cat-burglar-style black ski masks, whereas the Italian-based streetwear label GCDS infused the wintery staple in a breathable mesh fabric in a summery shade of pastel blue.

So, what’s the takeaway?

Let your freak flag fly this winter and give babushkas a try.
