Today, the massively inconvenient location of the Chelsea Art Museum was chock full of eager Catherine Malandrino fans. Sadly, only those with a front row seat had the opportunity to enjoy, as the rest of the crammed-in lot could only view looks from the waist up. But from what we could see, there wasn’t a whole lot to miss.
For spring, Malandrino stuck to her traditional formula of playing with fabrics. But mixed in a sea of pintucking, scalloping, soft draping, and lace cutouts were a couple of surprises, including two dresses bearing the face of Lady Liberty. Random, yes. Attractive? No. Perhaps they were an ode to her patriotic mood – she took her final bow in a dress bearing the American flag.
Other nonsensical elements were the fishnet dresses (ill-fitting and as unattractive as they sound), the sushi roll hairstyles, and the seasonless colors (nude, taupe and black).
But it wasn’t all so bland – an off-the-shoulder gown with liquid chain detail and the rhinestone encrusted cat-eyed sunglasses added a touch of glam in an otherwise typical Malandrino collection.
