CHANEL is a little bit like “Citizen Kane” or René Descartes’ meditations. Revolutionaries all, they transformed our sensibilities, be it film, Western philosophy or, in Chanel’s case, fashion. Where “Kane” invented deep focus and low-angle camera shots, and Descartes gave the world rationalism and analytic geometry, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel offered up sportswear, spectator shoes, pearls and – take that, René – the little black dress.

She hit the spotlight in the ’20s with Chanel No.5, hit her stride in the ’30s with borrowed menswear from her lover, the Duke of Westminster, and after a wartime hiatus came back in 1954 with the Chanel suit. She gave birth to style statements that live on – and happen to be major trends this fall. Check out the re-released “Chanel and Her World” – with pictures! – or “The Collection,” a new novel based on Chanel and her atelier in the ’20s, which you can actually visit on coco-mademoiselle.com. Take a tour of her famous salon and apartment, guided by Keira Knightley.
