The vintage ’70s moment continues to get re-invented a few different ways by vastly different designers.
Derek Lam took last season’s “Love Story” and re-interpreted it with new technical fabrics. At his hand, a pea coat and a silk shirt and bootleg tailored pants get built for 2011 speed.
Tory Burch took a tour through the archives of the titans of American sportswear, from Blass to Cashin and beyond and served up a mash-up of classics that will satisfy all corners of her ever-growing audience. She hit all of fall’s high notes with combos of burgundy and navy, beige and black and the preppy propriety of schoolgirl uniforms with a fashionista’s knowing twist.
At DKNY, Donna Karan crossed ’70s with a little ’80s Mod — from vintage-feeling color block silk pleat dresses to skinny plaid pantsuits. Short hems, long hems, skinny pants, flared pants, it’s all topped with a statement jacket, from a short camel cape to a navy and black V-neck coat with leather sleeves.
Diane von Furstenberg had pioneering women on her mind for fall. But as always with DVF, this woman is a nomad collecting along her travels. She started in the South-West giving her tunic dresses a little Tex Mex flavor with a fringe vest and boots. But the Gauchos soon went uptown in head-to-toe sky blue and green outfits of culottes, blouses and fur vests with matching sandals. For evening, she took a trip to the Far East with skinny pajama suits.
Eclectic and eccentric for sure, but the polished glamour of the ’70s is never far from mind.
