Drama McQueen
If it’s not dramatic, it’s not McQueen.
And so it went last night, at the fashion industry’s biggest red carpet event, the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute Gala. A smattering of the boldest of boldfaced names tipped their perfectly coiffed heads to the man of the night, the late Alexander McQueen.
From dramatic, curve-hugging silhouettes to full-on fabulous, frothy ballgowns, signatures of the designer were everywhere: in Daphne Guinness’s structured feathered Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen frock to Beyonce’s gold-sequined embroidered gown. And while the more voluminous gowns offered up doses of obvious glamour, quieter looks were equally statement-making: Madonna’s simple teal Stella McCartney column — “to match my eyes,” the singer said of the hue — revealed a glittery silver star-spangled train.
Diane Kruger’s long-sleeved Jason Wu gown — with flower-encrusted bodice — revealed a sexy slit that cut the most elegant line on the German actress’s figure.
It was pomp and circumstance, but in the most respectful way. And considering McQueen was one of the most dramatic designers of our time, there’s no doubt that some of these ladies honored his visions in the most fitting fashion.
