Celebrating his big 3-0 in the fashion biz, Michael Kors decided to throw a little party. Michael Douglas showed up with wife Catherine Zeta-Jones. So did Debra Messing, Bette Midler, Anjelica Huston . . . we could go on, but then we’d never get to talk about the clothes.
In a show best described as the designer’s greatest hits, sleek silhouettes ruled, while the slinky crystal jersey dresses made us drool. Sun-kissed tunics draped seductively, while sheer chiffons revealed up-to-there slits and plunging necklines — ideal for the jet set.
On the Upper East Side, Oscar de la Renta lavished his women in luxe tweed skirt suits, fox-fur coats and metallic pantsuits. All were embellished with sequins, feathers and jewel-tone velvets — even shoes were trimmed in mohair.
For evening, de la Renta went long with a series of column gowns — accented with tassels, crushed velvets and a paisley patchwork of sequins (our favorite) — to close the elegant affair.
For the young sophisticate, it’s all about volume and proportion at 3.1 Phillip Lim. Silky jumpsuits bearing leather sleeves, loosely shaped dresses and shamrock green jackets paired with slouchy trousers. It was all a very boy-meets-girl look, but it still bore the subtle cool factor that Lim’s customers crave.
But if a hipster edge is more your vibe, look to Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler. The duo whipped up a tightly edited, fantastically graphic collection filled with must-haves for fall: shredded macramé skirts, structured shifts with caged-cutouts and velvet dresses, all bearing hyper-colored zig-zagged prints in varying shades of the rainbow. All hail the princes of cool.
