Spring has arrived, gentlemen. Here, designer Michael Kors chimes in on the season’s trends to help you navigate the choppy waters of warm-weather dressing.
What warm-weather style mistakes have you seen men make?
A lot of men have trouble figuring out how to be casual but polished, and this gets even harder when the weather gets warmer. Also, I think the length of shorts is the easiest mistake to make during the summer months — too long or too short can throw your whole look off. And don’t think flip-flops belong on city streets — they don’t.
What’s your No. 1 spring fashion essential?
A great neutral tote. Spring is the time of the year when people are starting to travel on the weekends again, and a large tote that can go from the office right onto the plane is essential.
Beyond the catwalk, will wide-leg pants ever make a comeback?
The key to this very relaxed tailoring is that it’s imbued with comfort and easiness, so it works on everyone. I think for the generation of men who are still experimenting with fashion, we’ll see them embrace wide-leg pants because they’re versatile and they’re comfortable.
What do you say to he who is afraid to wear mandals?
Start with a simple, rugged slide in a neutral color — that’s the first step. And don’t forget a pedicure.
The button-up shirt: to tuck . . . or not to tuck?
It depends on who you are and where you’re going. See what feels right for you — there are no rules in fashion anymore.
