Denim lovers will be over the moon for G-Star’s fall collection.

For women, the dark denim looks which included a long, dramatic hooded coat dress, a three-quarter length trench with a huge shawl collar and capes lined in soft sweatshirt material were both fashionable and functional. Men’s highlights included stiff, militant jackets, rigid tapered pants tucked in to rubber Wellies and the straight-jacket inspired oversized white trench with tabs and flaps. Front row fashion family Tommy Hilfiger and his girlfriend, daughter and son were excited, rushing backstage to congratulate the designer when it was done.

But it was a little hard to focus on the clothes; the models came down the mechanical walkway at Gotham Hall in herds, often 10 people at a time, storming down towards the photographers, denim flying in the air, looking more like ad campaign or fabulous movie set than a fashion show.

In a week where lurex, lame and fur has been an important part of most of the shows, it was reassuring and exciting to see clothes that lots of people will actually be wearing in the streets come September.
