Swilling sake and shōchū, photographers and fashion fans crammed into a darkened space at Lincoln Center for a look at the offerings of Leather Japan. Mannequins — no, models — decked in lacquered-looking clothes stood on heelless platform shoes as iPads sought the best angles. A circle of satchels and shoulder bags hung from the ceiling, like an exhibit at the Museum of Natural History.
