The perfection-loving fashion world takes itself pretty seriously, and its glossy ads — with their stiletto-thin models Photoshopped to the hilt — often reflect it. But French journalist and stylist Nathalie Croquet has an antidote.
Together with New York- and Paris-based photographer Daniel Schweizer, Croquet came up with “Spoof,” a photo project started last summer that parodies major fashion campaigns fronted by models and celebrities like Kate Moss, Gisele Bündchen and Penélope Cruz.
The best part is that the snaps, which Croquet posts to Instagram, aren’t some half-assed hoax: The former photo editor, who’s worked for Jean Paul Gaultier, invests considerable effort into recreating the images with stunning accuracy.
What does it all mean?
“Women, consumption, retouching, cosmetics, aging, beauty, those all come to mind, but truly those issues are up for debate,” Croquet told Buzzfeed. “I feel people need a more spiritual approach to life, and good fun,” she said. “I’m happy to give them that, even if I’m just making fun of myself.”
