For most of the fashion world, the lavish garment served as an introduction to Chinese couturier Guo Pei.

The Beijing-born designer, 48, creates fanciful and opulent red-carpet fashions for Chinese stars like Li Bingbing and Zhang Ziyi.

She employs hundreds of craftspeople and will spend years perfecting a gown.

This fall, she teamed up with MAC on a limited-edition makeup collection, and is said to be working on her first ready-to-wear fashion line.

“I really do believe in fairy tales,” she says in a “China Icons” video.

“My heart is filled with our nation’s beautiful history, culture and costumes.”

Here, she shares a few things that are dear to her.
