Downtown cool has been Alexander Wang’s vibe for over a decade. But Sunday night, at his first-ever June runway, Wang presented what he calls a “new beginning, a new identity and a new day for my brand,” per the show notes.

The show, held at Manhattan’s South Street Seaport, displayed looks that infused Wang’s signature design with something more personal: his lived experience as a Chinese-American man in 2018.

His looks blended his usual city-chic with Americana motifs: micro-miniskirts topped with giant Mercedes-Benz logo belts, tube socks paired with loafers, and varsity jerseys with shredded denim. Most models were done up with star-and-stripe-spangled bandanas tied around their heads Axl Rose-style.

But the real mashup of Wang’s old-meets-new efforts appeared on Bella Hadid and Kaia Gerber. Their black leather lace bras and mini riffs on Chinatown’s iconic plastic “thank you” bags are perfect for the downtown party girls who snap up Wang’s pieces.
