Pretty, pretty, pretty. But is there a place for just plain pretty?

Monique Lhuillier hopes so. This designer does a big bridal business and has been trying to break into the ready-to-wear area for quite some time. She’s had great success getting her frocks on the backs of celebrities, many of whom were in her front row (Malin Ackerman, Elizabeth Banks and Zoe Saldana) but these dresses on the runway do not make as much of a statement as they should.

Lhuillier did several photo prints — of wheat, waves and wicker — that were quite striking once they were applied to long and shorter flowing gowns. Her tailoring on the fitted skirts and skinny suits was impeccable, but we need to see more than just one or two. The saturated hues of blue and green that she employs are really lovely, particularly when paired with the gold bead embroideries she used on waists, necklines and cuffs.
