People are swayed by ball gowns.

It is hard not to be entranced by beautiful, full-skirted gowns that make a statement when one enters a room. Usually, Monique Lhuillier is that designer — she’s the designer of fairy tale wedding gowns and her ready-to-wear usually follows suit, but not this season. This season she went tough, like a Chinese warrior.

High drama was what she was after and that is what she delivered. The colors were predominantly red and black with gold added for accents. A bold dragon pattern was used for a slim dress and a trench coat. Aggressively shredded tullle was used as a trim here and there for a slightly off-kilter effect.

Sure, there were a few fuller gowns at the end of the presentation — you can’t go cold turkey on your bread and butter — but this is a new Monique Lhuillier and we’re not sure that’s a bad thing.

What was a bad thing were Melissa George’s black eyebrows. Her brown hair was a welcome change for the former “Grey’s Anatomy” actress, but her brows were simply jarring. Lighten up on the pencil!
