Famed for reinvigorating the Givenchy aesthetic, Tisci’s latest moves are all about making the luxury fashion market more democratic. And what better place to roll out his fresh ideas than Manhattan.
Last month, Givenchy marked its retail push with a new flagship store, at 747 Madison Ave., an opening that dovetails with Givenchy’s spring 2016 runway collection, to be presented on Sept.
11 at New York Fashion Week. Certainly, when his runway show opens, fans can expect the unique marriage of high fashion and streetwear that has made Tisci a star. Given his social acumen, we may well see some of his diverse hordes of celeb supporters, including stars like Kanye West and Madonna, plus Julia Roberts and Donatella Versace, who have both fronted recent Givenchy campaigns.

But in a move that’s unusual at NYFW, Givenchy has also allotted 1,200 seats for his show to “real people”: students from local fashion colleges, plus the lucky winners of a ticket lottery. “Fashion is amazing and very exclusive. But I’ve long thought one day I would love to do a show where anybody could be a part of it,” Tisci said in a statement. The show will take place outside, on a yet-to-be-announced street, and will include art by Marina Abramovic, the renowned performance artist and a member of Tisci’s ever-hip inner circle.

The store is understated,” he says. “You enter as yourself and leave as a member the Givenchy ‘tribe’.”
Inviting everyday style stars (and even regular Janes) to get a first look at his wares while perched next to Kim Kardashian is a step towards making fashion more inclusive. But the price of Givenchy’s goods still starts at around $295 for flip-flops, with gowns in the thousands. Maybe there will be goody bags?
