Oscar de la Renta is so on his game.

This master of taste and tailoring for the female form can seemingly do nothing wrong. From start to finish, his looks were spot on. Bright jewel-y tones, embroidery, chunky hand-knit sweaters and tweeds, lace overlays and so forth and so on. He had it all and it all looked great.

But when you’re so on, do you get caught up in your own importance? Fashion shows are notoriously late because of traffic, weather or late arriving models, usually starting 30 to 40 minutes late. This designer’s show started 20 minutes after the 1 pm call time, which is great, but many of the big fashion watchers (French Vogue’s Carine Roitfeld, American Vogue’s Andre Leon Talley and Hamish Bowles, the Bergdorf Goodman team) were missing and walked in midway through.

Luckily, they arrived just in time to see Oscar’s bevvy of lovely, fitted strapless gowns, his embroidered chiffon gowns and the high-low shearling vest that accompanied his tulle embroidered show closer.

The show was accompanied by live music from East Village singer Regina Spektor. Her haunting voice and, irreverent lyrics and somewhat unorthodox style (tapping part of one song out on her microphone, human beat box style) provided a perfect juxtaposition to Oscar’s buttoned up fashion.
