PROENZA SCHOULER SHOW
Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen should be crowned the unofficial style muses for fall 2007. No, we’re not saying that the catwalks are filled with homeless-looking bag ladies, but the essence of the twins’ style — layering roomy pieces that wouldn’t traditionally be worn together — is cropping up in the most odd places.
Take Proenza Schouler — Jake McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez were all about piling on layers of pieces that combined several media in one garment. This duo has been known for the well-fitting, body accentuating, and baring, tops and dresses, but this season was all about camouflaging the body. Gorgeous coats of wool felt were made interesting with the addition of popcorn knit sleeves. Then it was piled on top of a little flannel skirt, a black T-shirt and a white woven shirt. They took it so far that there were T-shirts under lovely cocktail dresses.
There was an interlude of beautiful pieces decorated with different hues sashes that were manipulated into bows and criss-crosses on the bodices of little tops and lovely cocktail dresses of silk radzimir. These were some of the best pieces of the collection.
Overall, the collection felt more artistic than commercial, and we’re not sure that was a bad thing, but it was different.
