Public School designers Maxwell Osbourne and Dao-Yi Chow dish about their tricks to stay warm this winter — not to mention their shocking celebrity fan base.
What are your favorite fashion rules to break?
Dao-Yi Chow: We take the idea of “black tie” pretty loosely — we try to reinvent it. I’ll wear a more traditional tuxedo jacket, but with a T-shirt or mandarin-collared shirt underneath it and a nonmatching pair of bottoms.
You’ve both said NYC is your biggest inspiration. Why do you love it so much?
Maxwell Osborne: The city is where Dao and I are from, and its energy — its melting-pot nature, that kind of convergence of worlds — has always really appealed to us. That constant speed keeps us excited and gets our creativity flowing.
What are you guys rocking to stay warm this winter?
DC: We’re excited to wear the Public School hooded shearling jacket. It’s navy with a dolman sleeve, and the fit is great.
MO: There’s a pair of Public School Air Jordan 12s coming out very soon that I think every man should own. It’s really the perfect sneaker for the wintertime — heavy and warm, and constructed almost like a pair of boots.
A lot of famous faces have become devotees of Public School. Who stands out for you?
DC: Mick Jagger was a big one. We were surprised to learn that Howard Stern has bought Public School. And [the late] Robin Williams.
What style rules do you follow religiously?
MO: If being comfortable and being yourself is a rule, that’s one we live by every day.
