It was a intimate affair today at Ralph Lauren, where the fashion powerhouse took on the Far East and the flapper as his inspiration for fall: A red shantung-embroidered smoking jacket was the most literal reference, but a series of deco-inspired beaded dresses, exaggerated wide-leg pinstripe pants, sharply tailored suiting, emerald velvet wrap dresses and long, body-hugging gowns (a silky jade number was a highlight), most of which were struck with hits of red — a satin heel here, a boxy clutch there — suggested that the American designer is in a worldly state of mind.
