Let’s get one thing straight: Michael Shannon is a national treasure.

Whether or not you recognize the Oscar-worthy actor’s name, you’ll certainly know his face, whose intense and arresting demeanor reflects that of a coal-country native (Shannon was born in Lexington, Ky.). Best known for his roles in “Take Shelter,” and, most recently, “The Shape of Water,” Shannon never shies from taking on addled and villainous characters.

The stoic 43-year-old may also be one of our most overlooked style icons. Look no further than these pics for evidence of his cultivated aesthetic and discerning taste.
