Hollywood’s biggest stars shined bright in one the season’s most major trends — sequins — but the gowns weren’t of your typical Vegas variety.

Leading the pack was Ruth Negga, whose custom zippered Louis Vuitton number boasted modern-day warrior goddess. Sarah Paulson’s bold-shouldered gown by Marc Jacobs was a chic nod to fashion’s return to the ’80s (yes, you read that right), while “The Crown” darling Claire Foy’s chose a belted Erdem creation — whipped up from the sweetest pink hue, it proved you don’t need a crown to be considered royalty.

Speaking of pink, the color of the year should’ve earned its own Globe as the night’s winning hue. Zoe Saldana’s romantic, bow-topped Gucci gown coolly oozed sartorial success, while nominee Lily Collins’ major Zuhair Murad Couture lace ball gown was the perfect princess moment the Globes’ red carpet calls for.

The emergence of yellow was a surprising color story: From Emily Ratajkowski’s bombshell moment in Reem Acra to Natalie Portman’s mod embellished Prada gown, an homage to Jackie O — the character who earned her this year’s Best Actress nomination — the sunny shade was a warm welcome.

Red carpet heavy-hitters with a history of making the “best dressed” list dabbled in another of the season’s more playful trends: the cut-out shoulder. Between Nicole Kidman’s ethereal Alexander McQueen gown, Drew Barrymore’s boho Monique Lhuillier dress and Sofia Vergara’s sexpot Zuhair Murad Couture number, they all perfectly played into that nonchalant, dust-off-your-shoulder, I’m-a-superstar moment.
