Talk about dumpster diving!

Designer Heron Preston (who’s previously worked with Kanye West) is transforming used NYC Department of Sanitation uniforms into high-end fashion for his Sept. 7 show, co-hosted by the Foundation of New York’s Strongest.

“Workers were asked to wash their uniforms prior to donating them,” Preston assures Threads. “I also got them professionally washed … Now they smell like Downy.” And the DSNY pieces are naturals for the runway.

“They are basics that you can wear immediately on the street and wouldn’t look funny,” he says. “You couldn’t pull that off with an FDNY uniform or NYPD one.”

Fortunately, DSNY Commissioner Kathryn Garcia is a fashion fan (“I have an affinity — or perhaps a weakness — for Christian Louboutin”) and says garbage-couture is the future.

“Given the response we’re getting … I expect ‘trashy’ as a compliment to be included in the Urban Dictionary very, very soon,” she says.
